Yachtmaster Fast Track

If you are looking for a career opportunity across the world as a Fully Qualified Skipper, Crew member or deckhand, then you will need your Yachtmaster certification.  Customers join our Yachtmaster Offshore Course to either achieve a lifetime personal goal or to begin a career.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track is a carefully planned programme of Courses, Milebuilders, Theory, and Skills training that is designed to get you from beginner to Yachtmaster in 14 intensive weeks. Our programme includes 4 weeks away from our home base, milebuilding in the tidal waters of Portugal, Canaries or the Balearics. You will not only learn how to navigate and sail, but you will also learn skills that will be with you for the rest of your life, make new friends and have a life-changing experience.

The course provides all the skills, prerequisite miles, and passages for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam.  It can also be taken modular, to fit in with your own lifestyle, schedule and your financial plan.

Pre-Course Requirements

To start from week 1 Yachtmaster Fastrack program, there are no prerequisites.  To qualify for the Yachtmaster Offshore exam in week 14, you must have the following prerequisites, which the program will cover:

  • 50 days at sea, 2500 nautical miles

  • 5 days as a skipper

  • 5 passages over 60 miles long, including 2 overnight passages and 2 as a skipper

  • At least half the qualifying sea time must be gained in tidal waters and on vessels less than 24m LOA

  • All qualifying sea time must be within 10 years prior to the exam

  • Navigation to the standard of the Yachtmaster Coastal/Yachtmaster shorebased course

Module 1

  • RYA Competent Crew: A qualification that demonstrates basic sailing skills and an understanding of how to assist under the guidance of a skipper.

  • RYA Day Skipper Shorebased: This certification covers the theoretical aspects of becoming a confident skipper, including navigation, meteorology, and safety procedures.

  • RYA Day Skipper Practical: A practical assessment that shows students can command a small yacht safely and effectively, in familiar waters, during daylight.

  • RYA SRC: This qualification equips students with the skills to operate maritime VHF radio equipment, crucial for communication while at sea.*

  • RYA Diesel Engine: Understanding the fundamentals of diesel engine maintenance and troubleshooting is essential for any sailor, and this certificate confirms that knowledge.*

Module 2

  • RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased: This qualification signifies a comprehensive understanding of advanced navigation and seamanship, preparing students for the responsibilities of a Coastal Skipper.

  • RYA Coastal Skipper: This practical assessment confirms that students possess the skills and knowledge to command a sailing vessel safely and effectively in coastal waters.

  • RYA Radar: This certification equips students with the knowledge necessary to operate radar equipment, enhancing situational awareness and safety while navigating, as well as using radar for pilotage.*

  • RYA First Aid Course: This in class course of 1 full day (8 hours) covers the usual theme in a First Aid course but from the perspective of those who navigate.

Module 3

  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with Commercial Endorsement: This qualification demonstrates a high level of competence in sailing and navigation, allowing graduates to operate commercially. It signifies that students are not only skilled sailors but also understand the legal and safety responsibilities involved in carrying passengers at sea.

*SRC, Diesel Engine, First Aid and Radar courses, are a mix of online and 1 day classroom courses, which will be completed within the program at an appropriate time.

What to Bring

14 weeks is a long time without your creature comforts, but we do our best to make your time as comfortable as possible and recommend the following:

  • Sleeping bag

  • Toiletries

  • Prescribed medicine(s)

  • Sun protection

  • Wet weather gear

  • Specialist food items

  • Airport transfers

  • Entertainment (music/books)

  • Food and beverages whilst onshore
